Cornell announces 2022 Lake Ontario Fruit tour Aug. 9

Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Lake Ontario Fruit Summer Tour 2022 will be held Aug. 9 in eastern Orleans County, New York.

The all-day tour, hosted by CCE’s Lake Ontario Fruit Program, is free, but preregistration is required.

There are four planned orchard stops:

At Kast Farms, Brett Kast and his family will discuss herbicide trials, soil health, fire blight and mating disruption. They will also compare the NY1 variety on Geneva 41 and Malling 9-337 rootstocks.

At Fish Creek Orchards, Jose Iniguez and Jason Woodworth will discuss the Specialty Crop Research Initiative project on precision orchard management for apples, and three companies involved in the project — Moog, Vivid and Green Atlas — will provide overviews.

Lunch will be held at the Carlton Fire Co. Recreation Hall, where tour participants will have the opportunity to visit with sponsors and view demonstrations of new precision crop load management technology.

At Orchard Dale Fruit Farm, the Brown family will host a discussion of the Lake Ontario Fruit Program’s precision pruning work, as part of the SCRI grant. Crop load management research with Farm Vision and Fruit Scout will also be featured.

At Nesbitt Fruit Farms, Shane Nesbitt and family will discuss bloom thinning results on Honeycrisp with the use of the pollen tube growth model, as well as on-farm nursery production.
